Where does Laughter Yoga come from?

Laughter Yoga was developed in India in 1995 by a medical doctor, Dr. Madan Kataria.  Dr. Kataria began studying the health benefits of Laughter.  He discovered that laughter truly is the best medicine when laughing solidly for a minimum 15+ minutes a day!

Through more research Dr. Kataria discovered that the key to laughing for long periods of time is that scientists discovered our bodies do not know whether we are laughing fake or for real.  This information is great news!  This means that you don’t need to tell jokes to make people laugh.

What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga has very specific techniques to support each person in utilizing this exercise to the fullest. Laughter is the exercise and yoga is the form of breathing we use.  Yes! Laughing is an exercise! It has been proven that 10 minutes of uninterrupted laughter is equivalent to 30 minutes on a rowing machine.  Your body will burn calories and throughout a session healthy endorphins are released all through your body giving you the full benefit of a work out!

We can actually support people with beginning to laugh for no reason through child-like playfullness and soon the laughter will become infectious (in a great way) and turn to real authentic laughter and a total body workout.

Who Can Do Laughter Yoga?

Anyone!  The great part about this form of fitness is that you can do it standing up or from a chair.  Laughter yoga incorporates in a child-like playfulness to get us back to smiling and laughing in a natural way.  We create a safe environment for people to laugh freely how ever they laugh without feeling uncomfortable.

This program has been used in senior centres, community living, schools, conferences, hospitals, rehab clinics and more!  The benefits both physical and emotional are truly extraordinary.
