Are YOU Ready to Zumba in November?

I cannot believe that we are already into November tomorrow! 2018 is flying by and there doesn’t seem to be any brakes on this train!

That being said, it has been a pretty awesome year thus far and I am sure the rest of the year will be just as awesome!

This month, ALL CLASSES ARE ON! There are no adjustments to the schedule so please check your schedule and add your weekly Zumba class to your routine!

TONIGHT is HALLOWEEN and still October, so please note that with Halloween there is NO CLASS this evening. Enjoy¬† handing out candy or watching scary movies, or BOTH! ūüôā

November will be jam-packed with GREAT music, new moves and on November 16th, the morning class will head over to the Starving Artist, AFTER ZUMBA, to enjoy some great waffles and espressos. Come and join us if you can!

Class passes will remain at the same price with no increases.

Zumba is so much fun!

If you are someone who goes to the gym and counts the minutes until your workout is over…it may be time for you to try something different.

I was there once too…

I used to go to the gym and get on a treadmill and within 4 minutes (and I may be stretching that a little to make it seem like I really gave it all I had to make it to 5 minutes…) all I could think of was how long I had to keep doing this to reach the end.

Sound familiar?

Don’t get me wrong.¬† The gym can be GREAT! Some people really love it and I encourage my clients to switch it up and go if it inspires them. Trying different things can keep you from plateauing in your workouts.

When I found Zumba, my first reaction to the video I watched was “This is AMAZING!! I wanna do this!”

When I found my first class and went my first reaction was (tons of laughter from me) and “What the heck am I doing? I must look like a clown right now!”

The difference between yoga classes and Zumba classes (besides the obvious differences) is this…when you laugh and can’t stop in Zumba..it is fun and contagious….when you laugh and can’t stop in yoga…they kick you out…

I learned that one on my own too

(hence why I also teach Laughter Yoga…Kinda more my style)

After taking a few Zumba classes (started out with one a week), I began to know the moves a little more and fell in love with music and how FAST the class went.  I felt like I just stepped into class and suddenly we were at the cooldown.

BAM!

Just like that I was sweaty, relaxed and DONE my workout!! Felt so good!!

Each week came with more moves, new rhythms and then this class called Zumba Toning started and class was different but still as much fun as regular Zumba.  Then came Zumba Senato!!

What??!! All this from the Zumba Family??

The great part was that this class gave me a new way to continue doing what I loved and a new way to work my muscles so I didn’t plateau in my workouts.

Fast forward to 10 years now…2 years as a student and coming up 8 years teaching.

People often as me “Is Zumba just a fad?”

Honestly, I don’t know…I have been doing it for a decade now and I am not bored and have no interest in quitting. I love it. It is passion. It is play. It is sweaty fun with an AMAZING community of people! I cannot imagine going back to anything else.

I think there are quite a few people out there, just like me, that a decade has passed and we are all wondering where the time went because it is just that AWESOME and easy to get hooked doing it!

Hope you come have some laughs, sweat and groove moves with us all soon! It is NEVER too late to start!

Finding Joy In Your Life

Believe it or not before I found dance again in my life, I was quite an unhappy person.

The discovery of zumba fitness, for me, was like the opportunity to go around the world in 60 minutes without having to pay for an “around the world” trip! ¬†The music takes us to places you may never have visited but always wanted to. ¬†The steps are easy to follow so I was not trying to be a part of the National Ballet or anything in competition.

I could move, get lost in the music and what I didn’t realize at the time was how healthy that would be for my mind. ¬†I had it like I was doing this because I wanted to get into shape. What I came out of it with was a smile on my face every¬†time and not one that I had to push myself to do. I was just naturally happier than I had ever been!

I was researching today some of the benefits to dancing and found this on the Prevention.com site about a study that was conducted:

Swedish researchers, writing in the¬†Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, studied 112 teenage girls who were struggling with problems including neck and back pain, stress, anxiety, and depression. Half of the girls attended weekly dance classes, while the other half didn’t. The results? The girls who took the dance classes improved their mental health and reported a boost in mood‚ÄĒpositive effects that lasted up to eight months after the classes ended.

“According to these results, despite problems such as stress and other potential challenges in being an adolescent girl, dance can result in high adherence and a positive experience for the participants,” says lead study author Anna Dubert, of Sweden’s Center for Health Care Sciences, in a press release. “[This] might contribute to sustained new healthy habits.” ¬†(taken from prevention.com site)

This is the result that was shown in teens.  Now imagine, you as an adult, the results that it can produce.

Dancing is not only about movement but the music can literally have your mind clear which can be one of the biggest parts of the battle when you are grumpy or upset about something.

If you are having a bad day I request you do not go home and indulge in it….get yourself to a fitness class STAT! Do not listen to the negative thoughts you are having.

No matter how terrible you are feeling in the moment….put on your work out clothes, strap on your shoes and get yourself to the nearest class. ¬†If you are still struggling to get yourself out of the house, take an emergency dance break in your house….crank up the radio, your ipod with your favorite song and dance like nobody is watching! It’s like calling 9-1-1 for your soul!

Your body and mind will thank you for it.

Do Not Let Weather Stop You!

In this chilly weather I am so clear how hard it can be to get motivated to get out of the house and get to a fitness class. ¬†There are times when I don’t want to come out of the house myself but if I didn’t show then there would be no instructor so no matter what my thoughts are about it….I go.

I know I have wrote about this topic before, however, in the cold of winter it is always a good reminder that the hardest part of getting to anything you need or should get to…is simply getting yourself OUT OF THE HOUSE.

Once I am in motion to get somewhere, everything becomes simple.  There has never been a moment when I have gotten in the door to whatever event or class it was that I have regretted going once I have gotten there.

A few tips I have to support anyone coming out:

  1. Bundle up! Layer your clothing so that once you have completed your work out you can keep warm on your way home. OR change before you leave class.
  2. Come a few minutes early if you can to get settled in and warmed up.
  3. DO NOT stay home just because it is cold. If you do, you will find a reason to not show up often and before you know it you have no routine for your fitness.
  4. If you are sick, this is the only time to stay home and rest. Your body needs to be taken care of and if you are sick, give yourself the space to just be sick and rest.
  5. Do it for YOU! You are worth it. ¬†Cold weather or not. Do not be stopped by environment…unless there is a huge ice storm or the news is actually saying to stay home.
  6. Drink lots of water. Sometimes in colder weather we do not drink as much water because we are not over heating…drink it like you normally do. Stay hydrated!
  7. Take the 60 minutes of class to get lost in the music, have some fun and de-stress by taking yourself to a tropical place in your mind!

Be the leader of your life and not stopped by environment or your thoughts! Live and play full out! We only got this one life so let’s live it!

Will This Be YOUR Year?

2016 is finally here.  All the waiting and deliberating for this big day and it has now arrived.

Here is the question…..what will you do and who will you be to have this be an amazing year?

It is not that things just happen to us each year. ¬†It is a set of actions OR in-actions that we take that have the year be the “best ever” or the “worst ever”. ¬†That being said, I am totally clear and understand there are things that happen that seem completely out of our¬†control. ¬†When I look at it though, I can see how I react to it all will set in motion the next steps of actions I will take and what will come next.

In the world of fitness when resolutions are made I have said this myself before “I am going to lose 15 lbs and be at my strongest this year!” and then I went back to sitting on my couch, eating unhealthy foods and blaming it all on the stress I had at my job that made me want to do nothing but “relax” at the end of the day.

Sound familiar?

What I thought when coming home and turning on the TV and eating whatever I wanted was helping me to “relax” it was actually just setting me up to have a difficult day again on Tuesday, then Wednesday, then Thursday, then THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY came and then I could REALLY relax until Sunday afternoon when I would start to stress about all the work I had to do on Monday.

Where do you think TGIF came from? I think it came from this type of work cycle myself and the lack of physical fitness as an outlet to BURN AWAY THE STRESS AND CALORIES!

What I saw for myself is that even when I had those really stressful days, as soon as I got myself to a fitness class and got in the zone of working out, I felt ALIVE again! Like all the stress of the day melted away and I could breathe again.

Life got really simple when I started AND stuck to a regular fitness routine.  Sure, I struggled to get out the door to class most days, sometimes I still do and I am the instructor! However, the hardest part has always been getting there and when I shifted my thinking to remind myself how great I felt AFTER a workout, you bet I was going to be there.

TGIF should be changed to THANK GOD IT’S FITNESS!!!

What I am trying to say here is it really is great to set a New Year’s Resolution and YOUR actions will truly dictate whether by December 31, 2016 you have achieved them or not. ¬†Don’t be worried if you fall off, get back up. ¬†Don’t worry if your goal shifts, set the sails in a direction that keeps you moving forward.
