Zumba is so much fun!

If you are someone who goes to the gym and counts the minutes until your workout is over…it may be time for you to try something different.

I was there once too…

I used to go to the gym and get on a treadmill and within 4 minutes (and I may be stretching that a little to make it seem like I really gave it all I had to make it to 5 minutes…) all I could think of was how long I had to keep doing this to reach the end.

Sound familiar?

Don’t get me wrong.  The gym can be GREAT! Some people really love it and I encourage my clients to switch it up and go if it inspires them. Trying different things can keep you from plateauing in your workouts.

When I found Zumba, my first reaction to the video I watched was “This is AMAZING!! I wanna do this!”

When I found my first class and went my first reaction was (tons of laughter from me) and “What the heck am I doing? I must look like a clown right now!”

The difference between yoga classes and Zumba classes (besides the obvious differences) is this…when you laugh and can’t stop in Zumba..it is fun and contagious….when you laugh and can’t stop in yoga…they kick you out…

I learned that one on my own too

(hence why I also teach Laughter Yoga…Kinda more my style)

After taking a few Zumba classes (started out with one a week), I began to know the moves a little more and fell in love with music and how FAST the class went.  I felt like I just stepped into class and suddenly we were at the cooldown.

BAM!

Just like that I was sweaty, relaxed and DONE my workout!! Felt so good!!

Each week came with more moves, new rhythms and then this class called Zumba Toning started and class was different but still as much fun as regular Zumba.  Then came Zumba Senato!!

What??!! All this from the Zumba Family??

The great part was that this class gave me a new way to continue doing what I loved and a new way to work my muscles so I didn’t plateau in my workouts.

Fast forward to 10 years now…2 years as a student and coming up 8 years teaching.

People often as me “Is Zumba just a fad?”

Honestly, I don’t know…I have been doing it for a decade now and I am not bored and have no interest in quitting. I love it. It is passion. It is play. It is sweaty fun with an AMAZING community of people! I cannot imagine going back to anything else.

I think there are quite a few people out there, just like me, that a decade has passed and we are all wondering where the time went because it is just that AWESOME and easy to get hooked doing it!

Hope you come have some laughs, sweat and groove moves with us all soon! It is NEVER too late to start!

Will This Be YOUR Year?

2016 is finally here.  All the waiting and deliberating for this big day and it has now arrived.

Here is the question…..what will you do and who will you be to have this be an amazing year?

It is not that things just happen to us each year.  It is a set of actions OR in-actions that we take that have the year be the “best ever” or the “worst ever”.  That being said, I am totally clear and understand there are things that happen that seem completely out of our control.  When I look at it though, I can see how I react to it all will set in motion the next steps of actions I will take and what will come next.

In the world of fitness when resolutions are made I have said this myself before “I am going to lose 15 lbs and be at my strongest this year!” and then I went back to sitting on my couch, eating unhealthy foods and blaming it all on the stress I had at my job that made me want to do nothing but “relax” at the end of the day.

Sound familiar?

What I thought when coming home and turning on the TV and eating whatever I wanted was helping me to “relax” it was actually just setting me up to have a difficult day again on Tuesday, then Wednesday, then Thursday, then THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY came and then I could REALLY relax until Sunday afternoon when I would start to stress about all the work I had to do on Monday.

Where do you think TGIF came from? I think it came from this type of work cycle myself and the lack of physical fitness as an outlet to BURN AWAY THE STRESS AND CALORIES!

What I saw for myself is that even when I had those really stressful days, as soon as I got myself to a fitness class and got in the zone of working out, I felt ALIVE again! Like all the stress of the day melted away and I could breathe again.

Life got really simple when I started AND stuck to a regular fitness routine.  Sure, I struggled to get out the door to class most days, sometimes I still do and I am the instructor! However, the hardest part has always been getting there and when I shifted my thinking to remind myself how great I felt AFTER a workout, you bet I was going to be there.

TGIF should be changed to THANK GOD IT’S FITNESS!!!

What I am trying to say here is it really is great to set a New Year’s Resolution and YOUR actions will truly dictate whether by December 31, 2016 you have achieved them or not.  Don’t be worried if you fall off, get back up.  Don’t worry if your goal shifts, set the sails in a direction that keeps you moving forward.

Are YOU That Person Too?

I am the one you will see on a street corner tapping her toes and shaking her leg for what appears to be no reason….(until you spot the earphones)…

I am the one that hears a song playing in the grocery store and breaks into a mini choreopgraphy using the shopping cart as a prop…..

I am the one who sitting on a streetcar will begin to bop her head and do hand motions that you are not sure if I am calling you over or just hand dancing….

Begin to hear the music everywhere in life and soon….every place you go…is worth taking a moment to groove out, make yourself smile….and others around you wonder…”what is that woman up to?”

Keep’em guessing! Keeps life interesting!

We Are All Busy…Make Time!

Let’s face it…..we are ALL busy.

Whether it’s because of family, children, work, school, pets, commuting, we all have commitments that involve time and us being busy!

Some of the busiest people in the world still make time for their workout.  It may take you some time to sort out what time and which workout really supports you and your schedule but I promise you the busiest people workout because they know the benefit of taking care of themselves first really does make them more productive and focused in their day.

Take time this week to come out to a class. Schedule time for you and see the benefits!

Are You Looking to “Lose Weight?”

Our language really does create our world.  The intention to lose weight is great but then that really does give an opening for you to find it again.

When you are out to transform your body, it is important to not just look at “weight”. Look at your language and inches! It can be very discouraging if all you are doing is stepping on a scale once a week.  When you are working out and toning your body, you are building muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat.  It is most important to track your inches.  Inches around your shoulders, chest, waist, hips and thighs will give you a better picture of how you are doing along your fitness journey.

At the LOL Movement classes, if you wish to be measured and be tracked with your inch by inch look at what you are up to in your fitness goals, we can and will provide this for you!

In the meantime, if you are talking about “losing” weight, we suggest you just get rid of it and not find it again! 😉

Zumba Perfect to Cross Train

Recently I had a tri-athlete attend one of my aqua zumba classes.  He did it at first more so because he didn’t want to get out of the pool even though during class we do not allow for laps.

After class he came up to me grinning from ear to ear.  He let me know that it was his first aqua zumba class and said that my class was the BEST workout he had had in a LONG time. He asked if he could continue to take it for cross training from training for triathlon.

OF COURSE!

It is good, in whatever type of fitness you do to cross train.  This is one of the reasons why at our west end location we do a variety of forms of zumba.  One night we have zumba with sentao (which incorporates chairs to do a great core/ab workout), the next night is strictly cardio, then Thursdays we do zumba toning (using 1-2 lbs weights to tone and define the body)

If you are a zumba lover (as I am), finding and incorporating in all the different styles of zumba can really give you that cross-training performance.  If you are a marathon runner, tri-athlete, hockey player, swimmer….you may want to come join us for some off the charts FUN cross training!

Are You Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution Alive?

We are half way through week one of our official resolutions for the year. Are you keeping yours alive? Have you started it yet?

It’s not too late to get back up OR begin it! 

Do not get knocked down by having missed a day of your resolution.  Acknowledge it and get back on track!  Whether it be your fitness, finances, eating healthier, drinking more water….whatever it was that had you make it a resolution, it was important enough at the time for you say THIS IS IT….SO DO NOT STOP!

You may even collect $200 if you lap yourself on the game board of life! (just for all my Monopoly lovers! 🙂 )

If you haven’t started yet or you did and then realized what you took on as your fitness you no longer are enjoying, come try out Zumba. You do not need to be a dancer.  If you like music, you will love this class! Sweat, burn calories, have fun, laugh, let your day melt away!

AND YES! THIS IS JANUARY IN CANADA!

You will be up against cold weather to come out of your house! We believe in you and know you can do it!  Part of the resolution is getting past the hard stuff…I believe that is why they are set in January(has nothing to do with a “new year” 😉 )…if you can get past your mindset of “it’s too cold out, I am going home..” You will have beaten half the battle right there!
