Here We Go 2019!

There is something about starting a New Year that allows for all of what didn’t work the year before to be put behind me.

I begin to think about what it is that I want to accomplish in the New Year and looking at what it will take to do so.

I have made New Year’s resolutions before but quickly they fell out of existence…mainly because they were “great ideas” but I failed to put a plan of action to achieve them in place.

Now, in the first week of the New Year, I fill my calendar with actions. Actions that will propel what I want to accomplish and I do it in 3 month increments. I set out my schedule of what I know I already have to do. ie. Work, homework, accounting, etc. and then I add in my personal workouts (I schedule my fitness like I do work), meetings, phone calls, etc.

Yes. I teach fitness classes, however, I also do some personal fitness goals just for me as well as a mind, body, spirit regime of reading, meditating and more. Honestly, if I do not schedule this stuff in, it doesn’t happen and I had to get really straight with myself about that.

Left to my own devices, I could binge on Netflix or find 1000 other things to do before taking care of me. Yup. I am just as guilty as the next person!

Action plans create just that….ACTION!

Imagine yourself 3 months out from where you currently are and walk back from that point to what you had to do to get there and write it all down. Use a google calendar! Put a calendar app on your phone, or if you like to go ‘old school’ write it on a piece of paper and go to work!

Remember, do not beat yourself up if you miss an action. Just put it back in existence and look towards that future you are creating.

Be kind to yourself and be in action.

Will This Be YOUR Year?

2016 is finally here.  All the waiting and deliberating for this big day and it has now arrived.

Here is the question…..what will you do and who will you be to have this be an amazing year?

It is not that things just happen to us each year.  It is a set of actions OR in-actions that we take that have the year be the “best ever” or the “worst ever”.  That being said, I am totally clear and understand there are things that happen that seem completely out of our control.  When I look at it though, I can see how I react to it all will set in motion the next steps of actions I will take and what will come next.

In the world of fitness when resolutions are made I have said this myself before “I am going to lose 15 lbs and be at my strongest this year!” and then I went back to sitting on my couch, eating unhealthy foods and blaming it all on the stress I had at my job that made me want to do nothing but “relax” at the end of the day.

Sound familiar?

What I thought when coming home and turning on the TV and eating whatever I wanted was helping me to “relax” it was actually just setting me up to have a difficult day again on Tuesday, then Wednesday, then Thursday, then THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY came and then I could REALLY relax until Sunday afternoon when I would start to stress about all the work I had to do on Monday.

Where do you think TGIF came from? I think it came from this type of work cycle myself and the lack of physical fitness as an outlet to BURN AWAY THE STRESS AND CALORIES!

What I saw for myself is that even when I had those really stressful days, as soon as I got myself to a fitness class and got in the zone of working out, I felt ALIVE again! Like all the stress of the day melted away and I could breathe again.

Life got really simple when I started AND stuck to a regular fitness routine.  Sure, I struggled to get out the door to class most days, sometimes I still do and I am the instructor! However, the hardest part has always been getting there and when I shifted my thinking to remind myself how great I felt AFTER a workout, you bet I was going to be there.

TGIF should be changed to THANK GOD IT’S FITNESS!!!

What I am trying to say here is it really is great to set a New Year’s Resolution and YOUR actions will truly dictate whether by December 31, 2016 you have achieved them or not.  Don’t be worried if you fall off, get back up.  Don’t worry if your goal shifts, set the sails in a direction that keeps you moving forward.

Goals Goals and More Goals

With 2015 fast upon us, this is a time where many of us begin to reflect on all it is we want to accomplish in the year ahead.  It is a perfect time to journal and create what is next for you in life and with your family.

Many will have a fitness goal that may include but is not limited to:

-Quitting smoking

-Losing 5 or more pounds

-Lifting more weights

-Stop drinking alcohol (or at least moderate it)

-Come up with a weekly fitness routine

-Eating healthy

-Being stress-free

and really the list can go on and on…..

My advice as a fitness instructor is look to see what your Top 3 are and take (baby) steps in the direction of those three and develop mastery (or a plan) of how you will achieve these. Do not get down if one week the goal plan does not work exactly how you wanted it to. Rather get back up, re-adjust the plan and keep moving forward.

Have you ever noticed when you get all gung-ho about something and go FULL THROTTLE more than likely you hit the speed bumps a lot faster and then possibly a sink-hole shows up and before you know it, you have completely de-railed your best intentions?
