Here We Go 2019!

There is something about starting a New Year that allows for all of what didn’t work the year before to be put behind me.

I begin to think about what it is that I want to accomplish in the New Year and looking at what it will take to do so.

I have made New Year’s resolutions before but quickly they fell out of existence…mainly because they were “great ideas” but I failed to put a plan of action to achieve them in place.

Now, in the first week of the New Year, I fill my calendar with actions. Actions that will propel what I want to accomplish and I do it in 3 month increments. I set out my schedule of what I know I already have to do. ie. Work, homework, accounting, etc. and then I add in my personal workouts (I schedule my fitness like I do work), meetings, phone calls, etc.

Yes. I teach fitness classes, however, I also do some personal fitness goals just for me as well as a mind, body, spirit regime of reading, meditating and more. Honestly, if I do not schedule this stuff in, it doesn’t happen and I had to get really straight with myself about that.

Left to my own devices, I could binge on Netflix or find 1000 other things to do before taking care of me. Yup. I am just as guilty as the next person!

Action plans create just that….ACTION!

Imagine yourself 3 months out from where you currently are and walk back from that point to what you had to do to get there and write it all down. Use a google calendar! Put a calendar app on your phone, or if you like to go ‘old school’ write it on a piece of paper and go to work!

Remember, do not beat yourself up if you miss an action. Just put it back in existence and look towards that future you are creating.

Be kind to yourself and be in action.

Goal Check-in….Where Are You At?

Today rounds out the last day of 2 months since we made New Years Resolutions (If you made one).  I like to look at the 2 month mark as a check in to see what path I am on for the quarter to be able to finish strong.  No point in hiding out from what you created, face it head on know where you are at!

The questions I start with for myself are the following:

  1. What were my goals? (may sound crazy but by 2 months later some of us may have forgotten all together what the goals even were!)
  2. (If the goal is regarding fitness) Am I attending the number of classes I need to meet my fitness result?
  3. Am I eating the way I need to so that I am taking care of my health?
  4. Are all the relationships around me working?  If no, what steps do I need to take to have them all working?
  5. Am I inspired in my life? If no, what lights me up? Get connected to passions…
  6. Do I need to re-adjust any of my goals? (It is okay to make adjustments.  Sometimes we make a goal and then life gives us a completely different path to walk on than we originally figured and the goal makes no sense anymore.  Rather than beating yourself up, re-adjust your sails and create something new!)

I write these questions in a book or in a Word document and I just begin to write.  I write down the truth.  I write down what is actually so with all my goals. I do not lie to myself or beat myself up if I am not where I wanted to be. I simply look to see what it is that I may need to do to have it all work and then move forward.

A “New Year” is just another day that starts a new cycle but really it is just the day that follows December 31st so give yourself some space to create again.  Your year is NOT shot because things haven’t gone the way you wanted them to.  What has really happened is simply put….LIFE….and this is just how it looks sometimes.

I am giving myself freedom today to re-adjust what I need to and celebrate all that I have accomplished thus far! I get one life, so do you. Be your biggest fan!

Goal Setting May Curb Stress

It doesn’t matter what you do for a living, stress affects us all at least once in our lives.  Sometimes I hear people say things like “wow! That person is really living the life” or “man, I wish I was that guy! He has it so easy!”  I assert these statements are quite inaccurate being we all breathe the same air, we all have the same 24 hours in a day.

However, why do we sometimes look at others and think that in their life nothing must go wrong?

Perhaps it is the way in which that person deals with stress in their lives.  For example, Donald Trump is a guy who has a few dollars to throw around and looks like he leads a pretty amazing life by flying here and owning property there, but Donald Trump is not immune to stress.  Donald Trump has gone from millions to bankrupt and back up again.  I am sure the man has dealt with stress.

Setting goals to work towards can be key in eliminating stress being a bad thing in your life!  When we set goals and work towards them, sometimes the stresses that show up just become the bumps in the road on the way to achieving a goal.  Make sure your goal is something that leaves you lit up to achieve!

Many people start with a fitness goal.  Fitness goals can be fun!

Begin with something that is small and work your way up. Maybe there is a 5km run going on in your area that you could sign up for and begin to train.  Maybe there is “Walk” for something that inspires you. Maybe there is something more challenging like a Tough Mudder event or a Zumbathon coming up.   Whatever it may be, begin to set a goal that you may or may not be able to see as achievable and then go to work on.  Start looking at any stresses that show up as an opportunity to channel them into your training and then keep moving forward!
