The Journey Starts with a Single Step….

Before I became a zumba instructor and speaker, I had been searching for something I loved to do. Like many people, I was walking around going from job to job unfulfilled in my journey.  Don’t get me wrong, I had a lot of really great jobs and worked with a lot of really great people….but none of the work I was doing was filling that void I felt.

I started taking zumba to first find a fitness that I would stick to and enjoy as many other sports/fitness didn’t interest me and also because I found myself getting lost in the music and walking away feeling like that void I kept feeling would disappear.

As time went on, I found myself looking so forward to class and for me, at the time, it wasn’t really about the workout anymore, it was about how it made me feel the moment the music came on and my body began to move. It was like I could feel all of the issues I was having during the day just start to fall right off of me and I would be smiling from ear to ear by the end of class.

The more I did it, the more I wanted others to have this experience.  I realized my love for music and movement is what had been missing in my life. I didn’t even have any intention to become an instructor but then at some point, it just happened.

To this day, I still have days that are stressful but the difference is that everyday, I dance it away with amazing women and we laugh and sweat and leave all our worries at the door.  It doesn’t mean that the worries or stresses don’t come back either. Sometimes they do…..and then, I dance again and reflect on what needs to happen and most times I gain clarity on what I am dealing with while I am busting a move!

Becoming an instructor was one of the greatest gifts I could give to myself.   When I hear people say, “all journey starts with a single step”, I totally get it…and then this journey was followed up by a cha-cha-cha and I am forever grateful.

Let me support you in finding the mental, emotional and physical release you want/need in life. If you love music, you will love zumba. Anyone really CAN do it no matter your shape, mindset, physical disability….when there is a will, there is a way!

Whether we have met or not, you are someone in life who is reading this message and that makes you someone special to me. I do not need to have met you to know that there is somewhere in your life that you have taken something on and it has been amazing whether it have been for yourself, your family, friends, co-workers or a complete stranger….at some point in your life you did something or were someone who made a difference for someone else.

In a world that can sometimes seem really hard and that you are not appreciated….. I want you to know you are. You are appreciated and if you look around you, you will see it.

Thank you and appreciation of others does not even have to come because someone has done something for you either. It can just be that in this world of miracles you were created and you are on this earth and that in itself is something to appreciate and be thankful for!

Today I choose to look for the gold in every person I come in contact with, including myself.

Take on the challenge to thank or appreciate 5 people today.  Whether it be face to face, in a text, over a loud-speaker, in a taxi, a neighbor, a friend, a co-worker, family, yourself.  Begin taking on being thankful each and every day and watch your world expand!  The more thankful and appreciative you become, the happier you will become, the easier things in life become to deal with.

Halfway to 80 & Embracing It!

I was teaching Zumba at a highschool a while ago when some of the girls thought I was in my mid 20’s. While extremely flattered, I let them know I was almost 40 years old.  One of the girls then said “Whoa! You are half-way to 80!!!”

Ummm…ya….so, how would you respond to that?

It took me a moment to recoup….mainly because I never thought of 40 as half-way to 80 but she was absolutely right!  It began a journey of putting a lot of things in perspective for myself.

When I go into high schools now I often talk to girls about how they take care of themselves and manage their stress levels and look with them as to what they can do when they are out of highschool and on to university to support them in managing stress and being in a whole new world.  I think it is important to have this conversation with teens. Whether they do something about it right away or tuck that conversation away until it resurfaces down the road….fitness is a huge component to not only being physically fit but mentally fit as well and it’s important for young people and teens to know they can use fitness as an outlet over having to take medications to manage stress, anxiety and other issues.

When I was actually in my 20’s I was one of the most unhealthy people I knew!  I had it like “oh, I will be fine!”….”I will never get sick or be over weight”…….WRONG!

I am now looking back over the last 20 years and I must say, 20’s were unhealthy and then I woke up in my very late 20’s, early 30’s and realized I needed to do something about where my health and well-being was headed.  It was like the universe began to knock on my door saying “HEY YOU!! I am coming for you if you don’t wake up!!”

And I did! I answered that door and quickly!

My 30’s have really taken on a level of health and fitness I never thought would be possible for me.  It has always been a “one foot in front of the other” kind of experience to get to here.

Have you ever heard the question “how do you eat an elephant?”

Answer: one bite at a time.

I realized that I couldn’t just all of a sudden be healthy. I had to start somewhere and slowly work my way through it.

And I did! One bite at a time.

My 30’s became about embracing a positive mindset (mindset is ALWAYS the best place to start), learning about foods, finding physical activities I love to do…to the point (for me) that it became a career.  The further I went with it, the more I wanted to support others in finding their fitness and wellness passions that they may not even be aware existed!

Now here I am, about to embrace my “halfway to 80” life and I feel younger now than I ever did.  The older I get, the more wisdom in taking care of myself and those around me I feel and wish to contribute to.  Age is just a number but in those numbers comes wisdom, strength, courage when you listen for the gold in your life and answer when the universe knocks!

Be You. Embrace Age. Love Life.

Turning Negativity into Positivity

” I can’t do that!”

“I don’t have time”

“It’s too hard”

We all have either said these things or have a version of this somewhere in our lives. Whether it be in fitness, relationships, career, etc.

Have you ever just looked at a pool and thought “yup…it’s too cold I am not going in?”  If you have then you are really afraid of trying anything.

The truth is, you gotta get wet to know if it is cold or not.

The truth is you gotta TRY NEW THINGS to know if you actually like them.

The truth is you gotta MAKE THE TIME to discover what works for you.

I once had a class of special needs adults that I was working with in a fitness class.  A couple of my clients said “I can’t do that”…my response to them was this…

“Do you know why you can’t?”

They shook their heads..

“Why you can’t is because you keep putting the letter ‘T’ at the end of the word ‘Can” and therefore you now can’t.”

I saw them ponder this for a moment and then suddenly big grins consumed their faces and they began to giggle.

In that moment they said “Then I really CAN!” and they began doing the exercise with me and it was THAT simple.  All of the thoughts that were getting in the way, all of the negativity was GONE.  They shifted the way they thought about what they were doing and stopped judging it from negativity and not doing it and suddenly they were having fun and trying new things.

They now make the time, try all the moves to see what they CAN do and are at every class.  This coming from people who have real disabilities, some physical and some mental/emotional and in a moment can grab onto a new concept and just go with it.

Our words create our world in all areas of life.  

Begin to notice what you shut yourself off to in a world of possibility before you even give it a go.

Do not stand back and watch a class, take it.

Do not have your relationships be one-sided, create it.

Whatever it is that you “feel” is stopping you, notice that feeling is coming from a thought. Give it up as it does not serve you and get out there in your life!

Let It Move You!

When I was a kid my parents put me in dance classes. Not into one specific genre but a whole bunch…tap, jazz, ballet, streamer dancing, baton twirling, fan dancing and I am sure there were others but these really stuck out for me.

I started quite young…I think around 4 years old. Maybe 5. My first recital all I remember was looking for and waving at my Grandpa the whole time I was on stage.

As I got older, I don’t think I truly appreciated how awesome dance was. Around age 12, I developed an issue with my ankles where the tendons were not growing with the rest of my foot and it was making it painful to dance.  Soon after this, I quit dancing all together. It became this “thing” I once did.

After dance, I discovered band at school and went on to play clarinet, drums and a bit of violin. Only really getting good at clarinet.  I guess music has always been a part of my life whether I was dancing or playing an instrument or singing (I am really not a good singer but when I am rockin out…like to think I am!)

When I discovered dance again as an adult…(in my 30’s), I had no idea the role that dance would play in my life again.  From being a student of zumba over 8+ years ago to now teaching the program for the past 6 years, everything in my life has altered emotionally, mentally, physically and of course, career-wise.

When I first started taking classes I noticed that by the end of 60 minutes, I felt all of the stress I would normally take home at the end of a work day was no longer there.  I would go home either with more energy to be with my friends and family or I would be so played out I could go to sleep…and ACTUALLY sleep! (That is for another blog….sleep is an issue on its own!)

Mentally I began to picture steps, movements and from learning counting and movement again I became better at work projects. I can’t really explain this one too much but its like problem solving became much easier in life.

Emotionally I was all around a happier person. I noticed that I wasn’t as anxious about everything in life as I was before.

Physically was pretty clear…my clothes began to hang in places on my body I never thought possible. I had more energy, focus, and my strength was growing off the charts.  I found myself even taking on challenges to run half marathons, do Spartan Races…things I never thought I would take on….ever.

Dance is such a huge part of life and if you think about it music and movement of all sorts play a huge role in all our lives.  I want to teach people to dance and move for the rest of my life.  There is no greater gift that I see I can give to people than that of them discovering their own musical movement and self-expression to be happy, healthy confident people of all ages, races, religions.

The way I see it….music and dance are a gift to the world and it really is the gift that keeps on giving. Allow yourself to discover your passions and play full-out! We only get this one chance in life to love every minute of it!
