Don’t Miss Out…Just Move!

As an instructor of Zumba, I hear from people who say “I have 2 left feet, I can’t dance…” or “It’s too hard, I have no rhythm.”

Understandably, some people seem to have better rhythm or are quicker to catch on than others, however, it is in my opinion that each and EVERY person on this planet CAN dance!

Dancing can look a variety of ways of course but dancing is dancing all the same.

How can I say that?

I have been fortunate to be teaching Zumba classes to people of all abilities. What this means is I teach people in wheelchairs, canes, crutches, mental, physical, emotional issues, epileptic, down syndrome, mute, deaf, Parkinson’s and of course those who say they have no rhythm for many years now.

What I have learned is that at the heart of every human being, there is a rhythm.

There is a basic ability, an innate way of being that has movement to music be present whether we can physically move our body or not. The movement can also occur within our mind while our body does something completely different.

Some people when they dance make it look so easy and fluent that they would be masterful in a dance competition. Others look awkward BUT in actual fact they are moving their body to the rhythm THEY hear and feel and truly are dancing no matter what it may “look like.”

In society, we tend to compare ourselves to one another in many areas, including our dancing skills. If we were just able to, for a moment, step out of comparing, we would all see we ALL have the ABILITY to move our bodies and be lost in music no matter what it looks like.

Therefore, we ALL have the ability to DANCE!

Stop worrying about others will think when you move to music. Give yourself over to the rhythm and in the case of my deaf clients, I teach them dance motion through mimic movements and they light up when they match my movements.

Just imagine for a moment how freeing it would be to just enjoy music for what it is. A beautiful sound journey that ignites your body, mind and spirit. A joyous playful rhythm that ignites your ability to move freely!

Anyone CAN do it and personally, I KNOW YOU CAN TOO!

Discover Your Passion and Make it Your Purpose!

Before creating the LOL Movement, I used to work many different jobs….for years I worked behind a desk as an office manager. Before that in ophthalmology and prior to that managing gyms and offices.  I would go from job to job thinking “this will be THE ONE!”

Does this sound familiar?

Excited at first. Delighted with the tasks I had in front of me and then at some point….I would lose my passion or drive for it.  It became a J-O-B….just something I did to pay the bills. While I continue to do it well, in my heart I always would know when the passion for it had left.

Upon discovering Zumba it was like my whole body came alive. I never saw it as a career or something I would be passionate about. It was just that class I took on Thursdays that allowed me to stop thinking or worrying for an hour.  When my instructor approached me one day and said I should teach this, I thought she had lost it….but later that night I began to think about it and weeks later, I found a training and threw my hat over the wall and went for it.

Best decision I ever made!

I started out small….teaching one class a week for about 6 months….then two classes for about another 6 months….then four a week….then (rearranging my day job to accommodate more classes) six classes a week…..then it just got out of control!

I realized that what I was doing for fun and what I loved were colliding together and it was awesome. I was suddenly consumed by choreographing…dancing on the subway to make up new routines…figuring out how I could do more classes and who else could benefit from this!

My passion became my purpose.  Now, nearly 2 years later on my own building this, I continue to live my passion and know that my purpose is to have people see how AMAZING they truly are and what they CAN accomplish.

Are there struggles? Yes.

Do I always win? No.

Do I get back up and keep going? Yes.

Will I ever give up on anyone? No.

Everyday is a gift. The moment your eyes open, you have been given another day to make the most of. Do not play small. Go for your dreams. Create visions. Dance like nobody is watching…..LIVE!

I want to me you. Come dance with us! Check out the schedule and take the LEAP onto the dance floor!

Lose Yourself In Music and Find Your Passion

Music is like the world and all its happiness and sadness speaking to you.  I love music and I never really realized how much until I began Zumba fitness.  Whether I know the language or not, I find myself lost in the words and beats and loving the feeling the different instruments take me to.

Music is a universal language.  You can feel what an artist is expressing through the passion that comes through in sound.  On days when I feel down and need a “pick me up”, I always hit my playlist to all the happy tunes that bring back happy memories or thoughts of future memories I look forward to having.

Latin music, in my view, moves the soul and spirit.

A beat with steel drums can quickly have me tapping my toes and smiling.  I guitar wailing out in a flamenco or ramba will stir passions in me I didn’t even know were present.

When I realized that I had this connection with music, I just couldn’t get enough of it.  I listen to everything from Tony Bennett, Imagine Dragons, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Daddy Yankee, Kumbia Kings to good ol’ Garth Brooks and so many more and it really doesn’t matter which genre it is….I LOVE IT!

What I love even more about Zumba fitness is the love, passion, laughter and fun that happens in a Zumba class. Whether you can do all the moves or not, it really makes no difference to getting the desired end result which is an amazing sweat on and stress reliever.  My love for music makes each class its own entity. What do I mean? Many of my classes will have totally different music and themes to it to keep in interesting and fun.  I am not teaching you choreography so you can hit the Broadway stage, I am teaching you simple moves to keep you out of your head and on the dance floor!  To let you let go with passion and self-expression in a safe environment.

I couldn’t imagine my life without music!

Life is much too short….DANCE!

What is Zumba Sentao?

Sentao means in a chair. No, this is not chair dancing in the form you are thinking of! Naughty…naughty… It is also not chair exercises like one might find at a senior centre. It is more of a mash between the two with its own twists.

Zumba Sentao takes all the great musical rhythms that you find in a regular Zumba class and you add a chair to do specific moves that benefit the overall body and in my experience, as an instructor of Zumba sentao, your core. You could be doing anything from standing beside your chair doing leg lifts and then dance is choreographed in the routine, to doing push ups off the chair, to doing leg lifts, you name it!

When I took the Sentao training I had no idea how well it would go over in class. After taking the training I asked my clients if they would like to try it. After the first class, my clients were hooked! They love the intensity of Sentao and they don’t have to lose any of their favorite rhythms to incorporate in a NEW fitness program!

Zumba Sentao works you over from head to toe and you will feel AMAZING!

If you haven’t tried Zumba Sentao yet, please come and try it!

What is Zumba Toning?

As you may or may not know Zumba is a latin cardio fitness dance that has swept the world! With its rhythmic music and easy to follow dance steps, people are getting fit and feeling more like they are at a bar (without the alcohol) having fun dancing with their friends than they are doing a common “workout” one may experience at the gym.

The Live OUT LOUD Movement embraces Zumba in MANY forms. One being Zumba Toning.  I took on becoming a licensed instructor in Zumba Toning because I was seeing the cardio benefit of basic Zumba and wanted to add weights in a safe and effective way for my clients. I have no interest in “bulking” up, however wanting definition in my body, I saw this as a great way to enjoy my favorite music and get toned all over.

Zumba toning incorporates in all the music one will hear in basic Zumba class but the moves are slowed down a bit and the participant will use 1-2.5 lbs (I am not kidding YOU WILL get toned from this!) hand weights.  When following your instructor and doing the motions with the hand weights it is a mind of matter experience.  I am clear the weights are 1-2.5lbs, however, move them as if they were 10 lbs.  If they are 10 lbs, you are not going to flail your arms all over the place, are you? No.

Moving the weights in your hands with intentionality and slowly as you would 10 lbs causes your muscles to work and your body to tone WHILE you are having fun in that dance club environment (without alcohol but LOTS OF WATER!) that makes you want to move!

Many of my clients ask me in the beginning, “where do I get these weights?” You have a few options.  Zumba Fitness sells weights that are 1-2.5lbs and the cost is anywhere from $25-$35. I highly recommend going this route.  By purchasing the weights specific to the fitness you are getting the perfect quality to suit your work out AND they are also morracca’s so while you are toning up you have also just become a part of the band! YA!

Another option you can do, go to your local walmart, target, Canadian tire or any fitness place and find weights that are no more than 1-2.5lbs (I cannot stress the weight enough! DO NOT bring 5 lbs weights to class! You will not be able to lift your arms the next day or worse, will injure yourself!), you can have dumb bell style or ones you can put on your wrists.  Your third option is two water bottles. Make sure that neither of these water bottles will be used in keeping you hydrated or you will have just unbalanced your weights when you get thirsty!

This really is a FUN way to continue on your fitness journey and add in some toning along with your cardio! Let’s work those summer bodies!

Hope to see you soon! ~ Tammy, Your Friendly Neighborhood Zumba Instructor!

How Do You Listen to Music?

Musicians have an “ear” for it. Musicians hear things that we, as non-musicians, may not hear but know that there is something magnificent behind the sound.

Dancers can hear a specific beat. They count. They step with it. A world of colors through steps get created in every song. Have you ever been entranced watching someone dance?

Office people may hear music and try to relate the words to how their day is going…. “Baby! Don’t treat me bad! Cuz this could be the best thing you’ve ever had!” (Firehouse, oldie but a goodie!)

Teens may listen for what is happening in their life in the moment….”We are NEVER EVER getting back together….LIKE NEVER!” (Taylor Swift)

Children learn their A,B,C’s and 1,2,3’s to music! Sesame street is still on and still a BIG FAN of the sing a long!

This blog could go on and on into the number of genres of music that are out there! I, of course, have a love for latin music…..on any given day when I listen to latin music I feel like I have landed on an amazing island somewhere and my body will begin to instantly move to the beat. I have NO IDEA what they are singing about but I know all the words! (just not what they mean!)

Zumba fitness, which I teach, is all about music. Music that comes from all different genres and artists.  In zumba, we listen to music as if every song has fun, play, love, and stress-free living in every step and then bring that to the dance floor!

When you listen to music the next time, listen with a love and appreciation for the collaboration of fabulous artists that produce something for each of us to move to, to smile to, break up to, fall in love to, to let go our daily stresses.

Let music carry you to another world! Thank you to all the artists out there!!
