Are You Really Committed To Living A Healthy Life?

This blog today is intended to let you know that yes I have been there and I get it.  This is intended to have you in an inquiry of what’s important to you and give you an opportunity to be honest with yourself.

For many years I would say that being healthy and active was important to me….but then I would find reasons all the time why I couldn’t go to a class or even go for a run on my own time for that matter….My top reasons included:

  1. I am so tired right now from all the work I had to do today, I just want to relax
  2. It’s cold outside
  3. It’s raining
  4. It’s so hot I just need to sit on the patio
  5. The schedule of the classes doesn’t fit with my schedule
  6. I don’t feel good
  7. I have so many others things I need to do

I could really keep the list going….it wasn’t until I realized I had gained 50 pounds….felt horrible everyday….was unhappy in my own skin that I stopped making excuses.

See, I realized they were all excuses.

Whether I am tired or not I get up and go to work because if I didn’t I wouldn’t get paid.  The weather is always going to be however the weather is and if I allow the weather to dictate what I do everyday….well….I would NEVER get anything done.  My schedule is always going to be busy but there are fitness classes all over the place so I can find one, if I really want it, that would suit what I needed.  I don’t feel good because I am not taking care of myself and doing something for me and last but not least by a long shot…those “other things” that I need to get done will still be there after I take 60 minutes out of my day to take care of me and truth be told, I will have more energy to complete them once I take care of me!

Honestly, it was a horrible feeling that hot day in July when I sat in my car sweating….and sweating from the rolls on my belly…that was it for me….no more excuses. My actions were not correlating to what I said was important to me.

How often do you hear someone say “what’s important to me is by age 30 I have a serious health disease and I eat at McDonald’s every second day!” Have you ever heard anyone say that?

No? Me neither. But the reality is that people say health is important to them and then they don’t do anything about it or they allow their reasons or circumstances to stand in the way.

Where do you draw the line?

Will it take you to become physically ill with a disease before you take time out for yourself?

What other aspects of your life do you sell out on because you always have the “perfectly logical” reason for why you can’t right now?

You are not living when you are living in your reasons and excuses.  Living occurs when you challenge yourself, when you take time to push past the ordinary and grab hold of the extraordinary.  Life happens when you take a chance and leap…and sometimes fall or fail.

Healthy living occurs when you take actions that correlate with healthy living.  There is no magic pill that will come along and have you suddenly living healthy, you have to work for it, or find a way to have FUN working for it!

Discover Your Passion and Make it Your Purpose!

Before creating the LOL Movement, I used to work many different jobs….for years I worked behind a desk as an office manager. Before that in ophthalmology and prior to that managing gyms and offices.  I would go from job to job thinking “this will be THE ONE!”

Does this sound familiar?

Excited at first. Delighted with the tasks I had in front of me and then at some point….I would lose my passion or drive for it.  It became a J-O-B….just something I did to pay the bills. While I continue to do it well, in my heart I always would know when the passion for it had left.

Upon discovering Zumba it was like my whole body came alive. I never saw it as a career or something I would be passionate about. It was just that class I took on Thursdays that allowed me to stop thinking or worrying for an hour.  When my instructor approached me one day and said I should teach this, I thought she had lost it….but later that night I began to think about it and weeks later, I found a training and threw my hat over the wall and went for it.

Best decision I ever made!

I started out small….teaching one class a week for about 6 months….then two classes for about another 6 months….then four a week….then (rearranging my day job to accommodate more classes) six classes a week…..then it just got out of control!

I realized that what I was doing for fun and what I loved were colliding together and it was awesome. I was suddenly consumed by choreographing…dancing on the subway to make up new routines…figuring out how I could do more classes and who else could benefit from this!

My passion became my purpose.  Now, nearly 2 years later on my own building this, I continue to live my passion and know that my purpose is to have people see how AMAZING they truly are and what they CAN accomplish.

Are there struggles? Yes.

Do I always win? No.

Do I get back up and keep going? Yes.

Will I ever give up on anyone? No.

Everyday is a gift. The moment your eyes open, you have been given another day to make the most of. Do not play small. Go for your dreams. Create visions. Dance like nobody is watching…..LIVE!

What You May Not Know About Our Owner Tammy…

Tammy is not only the owner and main instructor for the Live OUT LOUD Movement.  She has a community of people who she works with each week that inspire her to be the Patch Adams of her generation!

What you may not know about Tammy & the Live OUT LOUD Movement……

Tammy has been impacting communities of adults with special needs for nearly 2 years now through Laughter Yoga and Zumba.

Tammy began with a vision of each and every person no matter age, race, or ability being given an opportunity to smile, laugh and dance.  Her work began to take shape in 2012 when she realized that her love for people with special needs was an overwhelming self-expression for her to make a difference with.

“When working with clients with special needs, you have to listen for the gold.  They all have the ability to be positive and go past whatever it is that is currently limiting them.  Teaching them to go past what they ‘think’ they can do and go on an adventure of discovery to what they CAN do, is where the miracles big and small lives.  When one can step past their personal limitations they can grow and take on new challenges including healing themselves by healing their mindset.”~ Tammy

Tammy grew up in a home where her mom took care of two children with special needs before school, at lunch and after school.  Ryan, who had Down Syndrome, and Jennifer who was deaf and had limited ability to use her legs and walked with crutches.  Tammy never knew the impact they would have on her life until much later when she was approached to teach Zumba fitness to adults with special needs.

“I had completely forgotten about my childhood and exposure at a young age to two youths with disabilities. To me, they were like me and they were my friends.  It never occurred to me when I started working with special needs clients that it was like my past coming back. I just knew from the moment I met everyone, I was in love with who they all are! I have a commitment to myself to work with as many special needs clients and people of all ages dealing with illness to support in healing through movement and laughter. It is my mission to give/teach what I know that releases healthy endorphins throughout the body to enhance what ever medical treatments a client may be under so they can live a quality, happy life!”~Tammy

Tammy very naturally began tailoring classes to meet the needs of the clients. Slowing down and teaching movements and ensuring the clients were comfortable with and could take on the different steps.  When the music comes on and floods the room, so do the smiles and cheers!  Holding a hand if needed, calling out a move, encouraging the group that they CAN do it, has each person cheer for more!

Each class ends with hugs, high fives, laughter and a sense of a great workout had by all…and of course, lunch!

My Clients Inspire Me Everyday!

I am writing today about my clients and a few of them (out of many)who have touched me deeply through my journey as a Zumba instructor and owner of my own fitness company.

January 2013 was a monumental moment for me where I took myself out of an office environment and into teaching different forms of Zumba full-time.  It was scary as I pulled the net of a regular income out from underneath me but it was exactly what I had always wanted and dreamed of doing.

Through the last 11 months of this journey, there have been highs, lows and literally everything in between and when I look at it the one thing that consistently keeps me going are the people who have come into my life.

I have had the opportunity to meet some really amazing people…teachers, engineers, moms, dads, daycare workers, accountants, delivery people, retirees, social workers, special needs people, technicians, people on a journey through Toronto that has had them end up in my class and many many more.

Every day I get to go and laugh and play with people. That is a privilege that many people do not get in their day.  Sometimes people come in and you can tell they have been faced with many challenges in their day.  It is my honour to be the one to bring happiness back to their day.  While I am clear I cannot make anyone happy, my “job” is to assist them with turning their frown upside down!  Honestly, it is my pleasure to do so.

I have the most amazing clients.  Once class is done, it is hard for many of us to want to leave as we stand around laughing and joking and telling stories.  A workout is not just about getting in and getting out all the time. There is a human aspect that I so appreciate having with my clients.  These are the people who touch my life and give me strength every day to know I am living my dreams!

Last night, one of my regular clients was dancing and I could completely see her whole body transformation and how much her emotional well-being had shifted.  It was phenomenal!  She said that she even cranks up the music at home and keeps dancing every day! I love that!!

I received an email from the most amazing young woman I had met on her journey through Toronto to England and who comes from South Africa, thanking me for inspiring her and all I can think is how much she has inspired me!  I have clients who are teachers that have a commitment to their students taking classes and so they are figuring out how to have the children join their after school classes.

I have student classes that now the teachers have seen and want to figure out how to have their own classes….It just inspires me every day to be surrounded by such upbeat, positive people out to cause community fun and play every where in their lives!

In this past year, this is the life I live.  These are the people I meet.  This is the life that when I think about it, I am moved to tears with joy that each and every person in my fitness journey has come into my life and I share my life with all of them.

It is an honour to be a fitness instructor and to share my life with all of you.  Words truly cannot even express how honoured I am to have you all in my life.

I Know The Benefit of Fitness First Hand…It Can Change Your Life!

In my last post, I let you in on this area of my life where I struggled.  I don’t even know if I would call it a struggle as much as I would say it occurred like a deep dark tunnel to which I may not get out.

GOOD NEWS….I did get out of it as you can now see!

The issue at the time for me was everything in my life that I was making bad and wrong for having happened and then making myself bad and wrong for having thoughts that it was bad and wrong.

Anyone relate to that?

One of the best things I did and it was for a whole lot of health reasons at the time (mental, emotional and physical), was I turned to fitness.  I had a friend who was a trainer and ran me and while I will most definitely tell you I didn’t enjoy running all that much, I did enjoy the feeling in my body after a good run.  It was euphoric. I felt lighter. I could breathe clearer, think clearer and I found myself smiling more and more.

There is just something about working out when you increase your heart rate and MOVE YOUR BODY instead of curling up in a little ball that pushes all the negativity out! I swear it was like having the upset, angry, depressed me being shot out my finger tips and toes. Day after day of training, I became happier, confident and before I knew it, ready to take on the world!!

This is why I am so lit up about supporting others with fitness. Fitness takes on so many forms from Zumba, running, yoga, LAUGHTER yoga, spinning, swimming, tennis, horseback riding, squash, boot camps, aqua aerobics, weight training, hockey, basketball, football, figure skating and even hoola hooping!!

Exercise is exercise and the point I am making is that you too can have that awesome feeling that fitness provides by finding something to do that lights you up….that you won’t give up on….that is an expression of who you are!

I have fallen in love with teaching many forms of Zumba and laughter yoga for a few very simple reasons:



Music is heavenly to me and any time I can move my body to music and especially teach others how to, I am IN!  Laughter….well seriously….I don’t know anyone that would dispute having a great belly laugh every now and then and how great is it that you can actually get a work out laughing?!?!!!

COME ON!!….That is just all sorts of AWESOME in my books!

Wherever you are at in thinking about fitness….want to start…have to start…just starting…well on your way…a pro…wherever you are at, just know that fitness is an outlet to bringing on the HAPPY in your life and if you are ready to dance and laugh, I am here to support you and your friends and family in meeting ALL your fitness needs!

Be Grateful & Thankful Every Day!



Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! Some of you may have seen some of your family and friends yesterday and today you are back to your life or today you are loving up and thankful for all you have surrounded yourself by.  Either way, I am sure many of you took a moment this weekend to be grateful and thankful for the people in your life, past, present and future!

Did you know, by being grateful and thankful every day, even in the face of struggling to find something to be grateful for…you can shift your entire day by staying positive?

Often we have things come up in our lives that we experience stress, upset or anger. Sometimes it takes a long time to make that experience disappear!   If you can look to see what it is that is happening and find the “silver lining” in ANY situation, you can shift the way you view what happens in your life!

I have people in my life that say I am too positive and share too much.  To those folks, I say this….thank you so much for taking the time to read what I write about, even if you don’t think it could be possible.  I am clear there are moments that I struggle with this.  The difference between you and I is that I am willing to continuously shift it….and you can too!

Wake up every day, and before your feet hit the floor, take 30 seconds to get in touch with what you are thankful and grateful for that day.

This small act, done every day for 30 seconds can make the difference in being upset for a short time to being upset for a lifetime!

Think about it!

Today I am Grateful for:

Being alive and getting to experience all the seasons

The heat in my home

My partner for being my biggest fan

Being in love

My dog stealing my shoes to remind me to put them away when I come home

Having an amazing family and extended family (past, present & future)

My back hurting so I know its time to take care of me

All my clients and how much fun it is support them all in living stress-free and fit!

Laughter Yoga & Zumba Delivered at Conference to Promote Stress Relief

This weekend I had a great opportunity to work alongside the Best Buddies program (is a national charitable organization that helps provide meaningful relationships for people with intellectual disabilities)  by supporting  and facilitating Laughter Yoga workshops to teach teens a tool they can use every day to deal with the stresses of life. Then on the following day I came back and facilitated a high energy Zumba class that had everyone up and moving! Over 200+ people participated throughout the weekend!

As a facilitator of these styles of workshops that talk about dealing with stress and stress-management it is a great way to see the results first hand as people walk through the experience of laughing for no reason, even in the face of their stress.

I was with the teens all day on Saturday and facilitated 4 workshops with about 50 teens in each group. One group consisted of teens with special needs.  What I came away with from these workshops were teens coming up to me hours after they had taken the workshop and saying “I still can’t stop smiling”, “I am sooooo relaxed”, “I didn’t know anyone when I came here and I feel so connected to everyone now.”

After teaching all day Saturday, I left and stopped at a grocery store.  Keep in mind, I had just spent all day having teens come out of their comfort zone, being present and compassionate to one another and then I stepped into the grocery store where no one made eye contact, not even the staff.  It was a strange experience.  When I went to pay for my groceries, I began to engage the teller by looking them in the eyes, talking to them and before I knew it, that person was smiling and engaging back with me.

It really doesn’t take much to lighten ourselves and be connected to others. Sometimes we all just get so wrapped up in what is happening in our own lives or the stresses of the day that we forget that there are other people in the world too and when we positively engage with others we are present and more relaxed ourselves.

The next day when I returned to the conference to deliver the Zumba program, the teens were STILL lit up and happy.  They greeted me right away with big smiles and some even began to giggle!  In the Zumba class, they were dancing and playing FULL OUT! Laughing and singing along to all the songs.  The teachers were too!  Everyone was there and present with everyone that was there!  I am also very clear that the other workshops and leaders that attended and presented at this conference had so much to offer that it was a true success of leadership coming together!

No One Left Behind!

I saw for myself that this really CAN happen. Teens and adults really CAN relieve stress and be present in life through laughing and/or dancing.  Healthy endorphins released in one’s body….the effects are tremendous! Doesn’t matter how old you are, if you have a disability or not, what level of stress you are experiencing, etc. EVERYONE can benefit from this!

Do You Ever Experience Stress or Bad Days?

Do you ever have those days where it seems like nothing you do is right or will meet the end result of what you are working on?

Do you ever feel like the world is going to swallow you whole and you have no idea how to pull yourself out of what you are “in”?

You are not alone.

We all have those days, including me. In fact, to be quite honest, I woke up in one of those days myself today.  It is a part of being human. It is a part of having a brain and I am clear on days like these, you and I both wish we could stop thinking to make all of “It is not enough” or “ I am not enough” or “I can’t do this” thoughts go away.

The thing to notice in what I just wrote is that they are thoughts and those thoughts over take us and it starts to show up physically sometimes.  What that might look like is making silly mistakes for example walking into a couch and stubbing your toe, not wanting to get out of bed, feeling like you might be sick and/or literally making yourself sick or what I just did…dropping the computer charger on my little toe! OUCH!

Thoughts, more commonly have an emotional effect on us. When I have these thoughts about myself or what is going on around me, I become emotional.  I cry, and usually stand there crying not even knowing why.  You may become angry, not want to be around people, yell, become so quiet no one would know you were in the room.

Why do I share this with you?

I share with you because you are not alone with this and there are solutions, even though you may resist it, to having you change how you are thinking and feeling.  When you are feeling stressed, emotional, like you can’t do anything right, come to a Zumba class or Laughter yoga.  The first step is just getting yourself ready to come, get in the car or on your bike or put your walking shoes on and come over.

Then walk through the door to the studio.

When you come in chances are you are going to be thinking…..”this is a bad idea!”or “seriously, why am I here??”  Wait for the class to start and the music to come on.  Start to feel the rhythm of the music.  Count the beats(if knowing the beats supports you), move your feet, move your arms.  Before you know it your attention will no longer be on the problems you walked in with.  I promise you, if you really want to suffer in those problems or feelings you can pick them up again when you leave.

Here is the thing, when you shift your energy….move your body….clear your mind, most times all those feelings and thoughts you walked in with will begin to disappear or at least not be as big and dramatic as you made them out to be to begin with.

I teach Zumba and Laughter yoga because I can see in my own life where these are tools have supported me with the everyday stresses of life.  The meaning of life is not to be stressed.  It really is what you make of it.

Many of my students talk to me after class about what they had been dealing with before they walked into class.  Truth is, I can actually see it on their faces when they come in and I can tell you the moment they let it go and gave themselves permission to just BE. They leave class lighter.  They leave class happy and relaxed. When I have tough days, even as an instructor, there is nothing that makes me happier than knowing I get to go and teach a class and be lost in the music and movement and by the time 60 minutes is up, my energy has shifted, especially when I am dealing with all those thoughts myself.
