Smiles Can Turn Your Day Around

In this day and age, I have discovered fewer people look up at each other when walking by.  Many are immersed in their cell phones and totally oblivious to what is happening around them.

Recently, I began ensuring that when I am out walking, I have no phone in hand and my head is up and I am making EYE CONTACT with anyone who looks my way.

Why?

I have discovered that when making eye contact AND flashing a smile….in most cases even a “hello!”, “Good morning/afternoon!” seems to alter not only my view of the day but it rearranges the molecules of the person I interact with.  Someone who may look completely down in the dumps can easily shift to a smile and exhibit a sparkle in their eye!

What I believe is that we never know what is going on for another human being. It may be the worst day of their life. It may have been a mediocre start, but as soon as I bring a SMILE or a FRIENDLY GESTURE into the interaction, they light up and so do I.

My request for the remainder of the week is for everyone to put our phones down, raise our eyes to meet others and make it a GREAT WEEK for not only YOU but those whom you interact with!

You never know how that smile of yours can impact others!

Go out and see how powerful you truly are!

It Is Time For Us All To Wake Up…

Toronto is being doused with the wonderful world of snow and we really cannot complain at all this year about it as I think this is only the 3rd or 4th day we have actually had it this year there is something to be said for the way people react to it.

For some, it is like the sky is literally falling on them and they cannot function until it is all gone.

Others are unable to operate motor vehicles and better yet do not know that they are unable to properly operate a motor vehicle and venture out anyway.

For most people though, we are able to function fully and are not stopped by the white stuff. Although we may not be fully present to what others are dealing with when the snow falls. (or really what others are dealing with at any time!)

Growing up in the prairies and then moving out east was an adventure in itself but then adding how people, still all from Canada, react to a snowfall is quite a sight to watch play out.

By the time I was done driving yesterday, I really needed a good workout to work out all the nervous energy that built up in me while watching people cut people off on the road, pedestrians almost hit by people who just wouldn’t slow down at the light and the one that had me honking my horn and losing it was people not even stopping, just driving right by a school bus that had the lights flashing and stop sign out.

Shame on you.  

There is NO WHERE you need to get to so bad that you are given permission to drive past a school bus with its lights and stop sign out nor to run that yellow to red light and cause an accident.  If you were allowed to do that then you would have called for a police escort.  I have their number, I can call for you if you like. Not joking, I would be happy to call the police for YOU!

I see that today’s blog has become a little bit of a rant and I am okay with that.

The purpose of my message today is for everyone, including me, to look at what you are NOT present to.  Is it the person in the cross walk? The stopped school bus? The woman trying to push a stroller through the snow?

Get present to others and you will begin to see how you can make a difference for them.  Making a difference does not mean digging into your pockets for money either. It means stopping the car BEFORE the light turns red, waiting behind the school bus, offering to help the lady with the stroller to get through the snow just to name a few.

This past Saturday I was on my way to a class and saw my neighbor walking and it was -23 out.  I figured she was headed to catch a bus.  I offered her a ride to the nearest subway station so she didn’t need to stand in the cold.  She was so grateful.

Many times, if you really look, the good deed you can do to support someone else doesn’t even interrupt what it is that you need to get done.  You need to LOOK though and be PRESENT to it and be OUT THERE with people and not stuck in your own agenda.

In a world filled with devastation happening, BE THE ONE to bring a flicker of light, a smile, a moment to remember to those you know and those you don’t.

Don’t be a part of the problem….BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!

Make Someone Smile Today

Yesterday I was on my way to teach my first class and I was taking the bus and then subway to get there.  As I hopped on the bus and paid my money I smiled at the bus driver and wished him a “good afternoon”.

While making my way to my seat I saw an elderly woman sitting smiling at me so I smiled back at her and said “Hi!”

She quickly said Hi back and as I sat down she turned to me and said “Your smile and presence just lit up this bus! Wow! I wish more people were like you! So friendly!”

I thanked her and quite honestly was surprised by her comment. I never thought before how a smile and acknowledgement of others while walking by could make someone’s day.

As we continued on our bus ride she asked me for the exact time and I told her.  She told me she had a concern that she would be late for her doctors appointment so I asked where it was and she told me.  I reassured her that from where she was getting off, she would have plenty of time to make it on time and she was very grateful.

Our bus came to a stop and as we both exited she turned around to me and gave me a big smile and wave and I returned it.

Chance meetings can happen anywhere and can be a great reminder of the difference you make when you are present to others and what they are dealing with.  You don’t have to buy someone a gift to brighten their day.

It can be as simple as a smile and “hello”.  My request on this friday is that you put your phones down and be present to people today. Make someone’s day with nothing more than a smile and a “hello”

The Challenge!

Have you ever gotten on the subway or bus and noticed how unhappy some people look?

Have you ever tried to make them smile by catching their attention?

I often do this. See, the thing is, you may be the only person who casts a smile their way in the day. You may be “the one” who shifts everything for them just by seeing that you notice them and they are not invisible.

As humans, and especially in a technologically advanced world now, we tend to find ways to check out, not have human interactions.  When I first moved to Toronto and would get on a bus, streetcar or subway, I would immediately greet whoever I sat beside with a big “hello!”….I noticed the reactions….some would smile back and greet me, some would change seats, some would say “you are not from here, are you?”  How ever they reacted was fine with me.

Making a difference for others through human interaction that are pleasant is one of the most basic ways to make a difference in the life of another.  Today, put down your phone when out in public, take out those ear buds. Reconnect with people!

You can come to zumba later and we will crank the music then and you can tune out the world! LOL! Well, not really, cuz we are gonna laugh and play and have fun together! 😉

Discover Your Passion and Make it Your Purpose!

Before creating the LOL Movement, I used to work many different jobs….for years I worked behind a desk as an office manager. Before that in ophthalmology and prior to that managing gyms and offices.  I would go from job to job thinking “this will be THE ONE!”

Does this sound familiar?

Excited at first. Delighted with the tasks I had in front of me and then at some point….I would lose my passion or drive for it.  It became a J-O-B….just something I did to pay the bills. While I continue to do it well, in my heart I always would know when the passion for it had left.

Upon discovering Zumba it was like my whole body came alive. I never saw it as a career or something I would be passionate about. It was just that class I took on Thursdays that allowed me to stop thinking or worrying for an hour.  When my instructor approached me one day and said I should teach this, I thought she had lost it….but later that night I began to think about it and weeks later, I found a training and threw my hat over the wall and went for it.

Best decision I ever made!

I started out small….teaching one class a week for about 6 months….then two classes for about another 6 months….then four a week….then (rearranging my day job to accommodate more classes) six classes a week…..then it just got out of control!

I realized that what I was doing for fun and what I loved were colliding together and it was awesome. I was suddenly consumed by choreographing…dancing on the subway to make up new routines…figuring out how I could do more classes and who else could benefit from this!

My passion became my purpose.  Now, nearly 2 years later on my own building this, I continue to live my passion and know that my purpose is to have people see how AMAZING they truly are and what they CAN accomplish.

Are there struggles? Yes.

Do I always win? No.

Do I get back up and keep going? Yes.

Will I ever give up on anyone? No.

Everyday is a gift. The moment your eyes open, you have been given another day to make the most of. Do not play small. Go for your dreams. Create visions. Dance like nobody is watching…..LIVE!

Robin Williams Death A Reminder For Us All

Last night we all heard of the death of a great comedian and outstanding actor Robin Williams.  His death was ruled not of natural causes but of suicide potentially caused due to a depression that he had been dealing with for quite some time.

I went to bed last night thinking of all the people I have known personally and celebrities who have struggled with depression and have taken their own lives because of it.  I have never understood suicide and because I don’t understand it, I can’t speak to what someone truly must be going through to have this be an option or the “only way out” of where they are at.

I laid awake most of the night thinking “How do we know who is really struggling with depression or mental illness?” How would we know when most times you can see when you get on a streetcar, TTC, walking down the street no one even makes eye contact with anyone?  Some people do, not many though.  Most people are too busy on their cell phones or listening to music (myself included at times) to stop and talk to someone, or say Hi….to another human being.

It seems as though we have lost touch with humanity.  We may be dealing with our own life stressors ie. Work, traffic, late, family life, etc. that we stop seeing each other and are only focused on the “problems/stressors” of our own lives.  Maybe even looking at how we can hide our own issues so no one finds out which has us not be present at all to what’s going on around us.

All I know is that there is support out in the world and it comes in many forms and we as a society, need to embrace and support each other in finding what works and not make people feel uncomfortable for sharing what they are dealing with.

Some forms of support are help lines, doctor support, hospitals specializing in mental health, naturopath’s, meditation, fitness practices (dance, yoga, cycling, etc all can benefit someone’s mental state) that can all support humanity really.  We need to take the stigma off of mental health and begin to see people as people and support one another.

The person sitting next to you while you read this may be someone in need of a smile and “hello” today, please give it to them.  Someone you meet today may be uplifted by you sharing a funny story with them. Please share it.  The person in the food court eating alone today, may be delightfully surprised by you asking to sit with them over lunch. Please do it.

Get reconnected with humanity today and every day. One step every day, love one another because who someone else is, is you as well.  We are one.

Be kind to one another. Make a difference.

Spring Has Sprung!!

Spring has finally sprung….. I think……

As we all begin to come out of hibernation, it is time to begin looking at what activities we will take on.  If you were brave enough to keep an activity routine throughout the winter, you will be in a great place to move on to more activities.  If you didn’t, never fear, it is never too late to get back up and get busy!

If you love to run, it’s time to jump off that treadmill and hit the sidewalks! Make a point to join your local Running Room or create a running group of your own! Learn the proper way of running and take it to the streets.

If you love to bike, jump off the stationary and feel the wind blowing through you hair as you glide down that hill at the end of your street.  Join a cycling group! Sign up for a long ride, maybe Friends for Life or Tour for Kids. Make a difference for others and be amongst your community of cyclists.

If you love to swim, well, you may have been in the pool all year long….The advantage to summer is you can take your fins to an outdoor pool! Okay, maybe not yet BUT soon!

If you enjoy all three of these choices (all three I love to watch and not participate in….just sayin’, that’s me!) sign up for a tri-athalon!  Be daring! Step outside the box this year and give yourself something new to strive for!

If you are like me….DANCE!!! Now that the weather is nice, we can dance indoors or outdoors….walking down the street, begin to dance, waiting for the bus? Shake your booty! HAVE FUN!! Join a local dance class (I HIGHLY recommend Zumba…..just sayin’ J) Meet others who love to dance and listen to music and sweat!  As a community, create fundraiser to raise money for a charity by dancing! Have some fun with it!

I could go on and on with possibilities you could take on this year and the truth is whatever it is that lights you up and is a self-expression of who you are and leaves you feeling amazing at the end of it, you should do it!

Take it on! The more you take care of YOU, the more you are able to support others! Put YOU first today!!
