The Journey Starts with a Single Step….

Before I became a zumba instructor and speaker, I had been searching for something I loved to do. Like many people, I was walking around going from job to job unfulfilled in my journey.  Don’t get me wrong, I had a lot of really great jobs and worked with a lot of really great people….but none of the work I was doing was filling that void I felt.

I started taking zumba to first find a fitness that I would stick to and enjoy as many other sports/fitness didn’t interest me and also because I found myself getting lost in the music and walking away feeling like that void I kept feeling would disappear.

As time went on, I found myself looking so forward to class and for me, at the time, it wasn’t really about the workout anymore, it was about how it made me feel the moment the music came on and my body began to move. It was like I could feel all of the issues I was having during the day just start to fall right off of me and I would be smiling from ear to ear by the end of class.

The more I did it, the more I wanted others to have this experience.  I realized my love for music and movement is what had been missing in my life. I didn’t even have any intention to become an instructor but then at some point, it just happened.

To this day, I still have days that are stressful but the difference is that everyday, I dance it away with amazing women and we laugh and sweat and leave all our worries at the door.  It doesn’t mean that the worries or stresses don’t come back either. Sometimes they do…..and then, I dance again and reflect on what needs to happen and most times I gain clarity on what I am dealing with while I am busting a move!

Becoming an instructor was one of the greatest gifts I could give to myself.   When I hear people say, “all journey starts with a single step”, I totally get it…and then this journey was followed up by a cha-cha-cha and I am forever grateful.

Let me support you in finding the mental, emotional and physical release you want/need in life. If you love music, you will love zumba. Anyone really CAN do it no matter your shape, mindset, physical disability….when there is a will, there is a way!

Let’s discover it together. I am on your side! 🙂

Thoughts That Keep Us Stuck In Life….

Some days I wake up and I am not in a good mood. I am not very nice with myself and as my own worst critic I start the day with being mean to me.

Can anyone relate?

I have been known to take on the attitude that I am not good enough and the evidence to prove that I am not enough shows up in the way that I would be “more” successful in my career, I would be making “more” money, I would be able to see my family “more”, I would have “more” free time to do what I want to do while balancing everything else….

Notice the word “more” and how much it shows up?

Yes. Sometimes we are the worst with the person we should be loving the most.

Ourselves.

Nobody is immune to this way of thinking. If there was a magic pill that could be taken to interrupt this thinking, we probably all would have taken it by now.

There is not.

There is however, the ability for each of us to notice when we are doing it and begin to shift the way we think about ourselves.  There are tools we have as human beings that can have this way of thinking begin to disappear.

Some of the tools I have used and continue to use as I have found them to be very successful are the following:

  • As crazy as it may sound….FITNESS…this is my #1 way to interrupt it. When I begin to work out, no matter how down I am or being hard on myself, I can’t help but feel every molecule in my body come alive with a sense of renewed energy that pumps me up in a positive way!  The happy endorphins that are released when I am moving my body….sends me into a state of euphoria and pleasure that has the rest of my thoughts for the day completely shift to positivity.
  • Being in communication….not from complaining or being a victim of my thoughts….just being in communication with a friend or colleague or physician about what is going on. If you do this, I strongly suggest you pick someone who will not buy into your “oh woe is me” story but someone who can hear it, get it, and either coach you through it or just listen and not judge or pass their opinion on..
  • Journaling…..writing down what is happening in your thoughts is very powerful. Many times when I can see it on paper I can finally see what the disconnect is. I can see how cruel I am being to myself and that what I am saying to myself just doesn’t coincide with who I am in reality.
  • Take time out to be in nature….and BE in the moment. Can you appreciate the beauty of the grass in a park, the tree out your window, the stunning world in which we live in? I call it the “stop and smelling the roses” moment. We have all heard that term but do you ever just take a moment to appreciate life and all the beauty in it?  When I am wrapped up in making myself wrong, I can always bet that I haven’t stopped to see what is physically around me.  The moment I do, is the moment I can breathe again.

These are just a few methods that I use to come back to reality. See, what I have learned is those thoughts we have about ourselves are just that….thoughts…..and thoughts CAN become things if we listen to them like they are the truth.  I am choosing every day to think thoughts that will serve me now and in the future and to interrupt those thoughts that work to tear me apart.

What will you choose?

If you are struggling and need someone to listen, coach, or work with you on creating a fitness or nutrition program that will support you….please reach out. I am here.

Listening To Your Body Needs & Wants: Confession

Confession:

I have denied my body for years any listening I could have for it up until about 10 years ago when I began to take my health very seriously.   There would be times I would listen with one ear and times I would tune out how I was feeling all together.

Can anyone relate?

I am very driven and putting it all out there, stubborn as an ox. I am a true Taurian!

Recently, since January, I have struggled off and on with breathing issues.  I do not have asthma and there is no hereditary signs of lung or heart issues.  For a while I was thinking ” I should get this checked out.” and then would make excuses to not call the Doctor and get an appointment.

You ever do that? “Should” on yourself?  I think we all do at times.

I used to also think when I was younger, “ya, I will get around to that physical…nothing is bothering me right now.”

These are dangerous thoughts when it comes to ones health.

Now, in my very late thirties, I am being probably the best listener to what is going on than I have ever been in my life.  See, when I listen to my body, it tells me everything I need to know about how to take care of it. When to drink water, when to sleep, when to exercise, when to go to the doctor. I am more alert and aware of what is happening physically, mentally and emotionally and it really did take something to start listening (not from being worried about everything) to what my body has to say.

Each of us are built differently. While we all have similarities that make us a human being, all of our bodies may operate just a little bit different and respond to exercise or treatments differently.

When I stopped “should’ing” on myself, I could see that the steps I needed to take to ensure this vessel I am in still keeps its “new car looks and parts” was that I needed to see my Doctor and let her know what was going on and how I was feeling.  It hasn’t slowed me down BUT I am clear if I don’t get this looked into, it could be something that escalates.

You know how it is easier to deal with something while it is small before it turns into a full-out life-altering event….small problem vs. big problem.

I am going through a lot of tests right now, continuing my fitness with my Doctor’s approval and I am listening to what my body needs and wants.  I know I will be okay because I am now awake and listening…. If my body wants a 20 minute cat nap, I take it! If it wants to dance like nobody is watching….well you totally know that WILL happen!  If I feel I am pushing myself too hard, I slow down.

I take this conversation very seriously with my own clients as well.  Listen to your bodies and know what you can and cannot do. It is not a problem to slow down for a class and take it at your own pace. Depending on your day and how you are feeling you may or may not be able to give 100% and its totally okay.  Your health must come first!

The problem in life and as a human is we all think it “won’t happen to me”  mentality to whatever it is and then BAM…you/I are dealing with it.  If you really listen, sometimes the warning signs are there….or my visual is always a “check engine” light will begin to flash and that is when you need to….well….check your engine…and better yet, just like an oil change….get checked over every 5000 km to ensure you and I are running perfectly!

Writing this, I am realizing how much better we are to our cars at times than we are to our bodies…just an observation! 😉

The moral of this blog today is listen to what your body needs.  Meditate. Spend some time with your self and discover what you see will support optimum health for your self and by all means, keep your check engine light working and your oil changed every 5000 km!

Take care of your selves out there!

Health & Well Being, Personal Stories

Turning Negativity into Positivity

” I can’t do that!”

“I don’t have time”

“It’s too hard”

We all have either said these things or have a version of this somewhere in our lives. Whether it be in fitness, relationships, career, etc.

Have you ever just looked at a pool and thought “yup…it’s too cold I am not going in?”  If you have then you are really afraid of trying anything.

The truth is, you gotta get wet to know if it is cold or not.

The truth is you gotta TRY NEW THINGS to know if you actually like them.

The truth is you gotta MAKE THE TIME to discover what works for you.

I once had a class of special needs adults that I was working with in a fitness class.  A couple of my clients said “I can’t do that”…my response to them was this…

“Do you know why you can’t?”

They shook their heads..

“Why you can’t is because you keep putting the letter ‘T’ at the end of the word ‘Can” and therefore you now can’t.”

I saw them ponder this for a moment and then suddenly big grins consumed their faces and they began to giggle.

In that moment they said “Then I really CAN!” and they began doing the exercise with me and it was THAT simple.  All of the thoughts that were getting in the way, all of the negativity was GONE.  They shifted the way they thought about what they were doing and stopped judging it from negativity and not doing it and suddenly they were having fun and trying new things.

They now make the time, try all the moves to see what they CAN do and are at every class.  This coming from people who have real disabilities, some physical and some mental/emotional and in a moment can grab onto a new concept and just go with it.

Our words create our world in all areas of life.

Begin to notice what you shut yourself off to in a world of possibility before you even give it a go.

Do not stand back and watch a class, take it.

Do not have your relationships be one-sided, create it.

Whatever it is that you “feel” is stopping you, notice that feeling is coming from a thought. Give it up as it does not serve you and get out there in your life!

I love you all. HAPPY THURSDAY!

Personal Stories

Let It Move You!

When I was a kid my parents put me in dance classes. Not into one specific genre but a whole bunch…tap, jazz, ballet, streamer dancing, baton twirling, fan dancing and I am sure there were others but these really stuck out for me.

I started quite young…I think around 4 years old. Maybe 5. My first recital all I remember was looking for and waving at my Grandpa the whole time I was on stage.

As I got older, I don’t think I truly appreciated how awesome dance was. Around age 12, I developed an issue with my ankles where the tendons were not growing with the rest of my foot and it was making it painful to dance.  Soon after this, I quit dancing all together. It became this “thing” I once did.

After dance, I discovered band at school and went on to play clarinet, drums and a bit of violin. Only really getting good at clarinet.  I guess music has always been a part of my life whether I was dancing or playing an instrument or singing (I am really not a good singer but when I am rockin out…like to think I am!)

When I discovered dance again as an adult…(in my 30’s), I had no idea the role that dance would play in my life again.  From being a student of zumba over 8+ years ago to now teaching the program for the past 6 years, everything in my life has altered emotionally, mentally, physically and of course, career-wise.

When I first started taking classes I noticed that by the end of 60 minutes, I felt all of the stress I would normally take home at the end of a work day was no longer there.  I would go home either with more energy to be with my friends and family or I would be so played out I could go to sleep…and ACTUALLY sleep! (That is for another blog….sleep is an issue on its own!)

Mentally I began to picture steps, movements and from learning counting and movement again I became better at work projects. I can’t really explain this one too much but its like problem solving became much easier in life.

Emotionally I was all around a happier person. I noticed that I wasn’t as anxious about everything in life as I was before.

Physically was pretty clear…my clothes began to hang in places on my body I never thought possible. I had more energy, focus, and my strength was growing off the charts.  I found myself even taking on challenges to run half marathons, do Spartan Races…things I never thought I would take on….ever.

Dance is such a huge part of life and if you think about it music and movement of all sorts play a huge role in all our lives.  I want to teach people to dance and move for the rest of my life.  There is no greater gift that I see I can give to people than that of them discovering their own musical movement and self-expression to be happy, healthy confident people of all ages, races, religions.

The way I see it….music and dance are a gift to the world and it really is the gift that keeps on giving. Allow yourself to discover your passions and play full-out! We only get this one chance in life to love every minute of it!

Workability In Life For Yourself and Others

Straight Talk Post:

Integrity.  This word gets thrown around a lot by people but only a small few really know what it means or how to have it.

Integrity: Honoring ones word. Doing what we say we will do. Creating work-ability for myself and others.

When I say I will do something and then take no action to do what it is I said I would do (or just continuously say I am sorry it will never happen again, and then it does), this lacks integrity and in time, if I continue to not do what I say, it has my word mean nothing.  I become someone whose words and actions are empty and people stop listening or believing in what I say.

Think about it.

When was the last time someone said something to you of an action they were going to take for themselves or to support others and then did not follow through and did not even acknowledge that they did not follow through?

This can be applied to many areas of our lives and sometimes it is easier to see it in others than ourselves at first.

Have you noticed that when people “say” they are going to work out and do not that at some point you stop believing them that they will?

I do.

While we may think that this in-action may be something rather small to stop believing in that person about, it can soon lead to other areas of their speaking and the way you listen to them or no longer listen to them.

Our words and Our actions are all we have.

The thoughts that we have after making promises or saying we are going to do something, those thoughts that stop us are also always going to be there. It is the few seconds between having those thoughts and taking the action anyway that will have our life be one we love or one where we stop believing we will and others stop believing to.

Today is a NEW day.

If there is anything you can see now that you have said or done that hasn’t worked, go out today and clean it up with yourself and/or with those affected by your actions or in-actions.  If you have lacked integrity with others, it may really take something on your part to restore the trust that they have lost in you and if you are really committed to the relationship, you will make it work.

If it is restoring the relationship you have with yourself and your fitness, relationship, health, diet, you will need to give yourself some space to not make yourself wrong but remind yourself that you are worth living a life that you truly are lit up about and you are no longer willing to sabotage yourself AND THEN when those other not so-kind thoughts show up you just say thanks, and move on from them.

Have your word create a phenomenal exciting world for you!

Be kind to yourself and to others today and everyday.

Benefits of Movement, Health & Well Being

Your Workout Is YOUR Workout

Fitness can be a lot of fun when you discover what you enjoy doing!

Anyone who comes to my Zumba classes for the first time is always offered one free class.

Why?

These are my Top 3 reasons why, as an instructor, I think it’s important to do this…

  1. You should have a choice before purchasing. You don’t just walk in and buy a car without taking it for a test drive first!
  2. I am clear that 98% of people, once they have come and danced with me and my class will see how much fun it is and want to stick to it!
  3. I am not interested in people buying a bunch of classes and then not coming back. Spend your money where you see something you WILL stick to!

Often people sign up for something, get “busy” in their life and give up on what they signed up for.  To stick to something, it needs to really resonate with you and then YOU need to develop the mindset that no matter how busy you get, your fitness routine is just as important as everything else and YOU will do it!

Stop putting your own health and well-being on the sideline! YOU ARE WORTH IT and by finding a fitness that speaks to you and motivates you AND finding an instructor that you love to work with, it will make the whole process very simple.

If you are unclear what fitness you love to do, take them all for a test drive until you discover the one OR maybe two or more that you love and put them in your schedule just the same as you do your work schedule.

You may not be getting paid in dollars right now to work out BUT by taking care of you and doing what you need to now, chances are you WILL be paid out in your own health which as we age can become very expensive if we do not take care of ourselves!

Think about it….. Your workout IS your work out!

SEE YOU IN CLASS!
