I have denied my body for years any listening I could have for it up until about 10 years ago when I began to take my health very seriously. There would be times I would listen with one ear and times I would tune out how I was feeling all together.
Can anyone relate?
I am very driven and putting it all out there, stubborn as an ox. I am a true Taurian!
Recently, since January, I have struggled off and on with breathing issues. I do not have asthma and there is no hereditary signs of lung or heart issues. For a while I was thinking ” I should get this checked out.” and then would make excuses to not call the Doctor and get an appointment.
You ever do that? “Should” on yourself? I think we all do at times.
I used to also think when I was younger, “ya, I will get around to that physical…nothing is bothering me right now.”
These are dangerous thoughts when it comes to ones health.
Now, in my very late thirties, I am being probably the best listener to what is going on than I have ever been in my life. See, when I listen to my body, it tells me everything I need to know about how to take care of it. When to drink water, when to sleep, when to exercise, when to go to the doctor. I am more alert and aware of what is happening physically, mentally and emotionally and it really did take something to start listening (not from being worried about everything) to what my body has to say.
Each of us are built differently. While we all have similarities that make us a human being, all of our bodies may operate just a little bit different and respond to exercise or treatments differently.
When I stopped “should’ing” on myself, I could see that the steps I needed to take to ensure this vessel I am in still keeps its “new car looks and parts” was that I needed to see my Doctor and let her know what was going on and how I was feeling. It hasn’t slowed me down BUT I am clear if I don’t get this looked into, it could be something that escalates.
You know how it is easier to deal with something while it is small before it turns into a full-out life-altering event….small problem vs. big problem.
I am going through a lot of tests right now, continuing my fitness with my Doctor’s approval and I am listening to what my body needs and wants. I know I will be okay because I am now awake and listening…. If my body wants a 20 minute cat nap, I take it! If it wants to dance like nobody is watching….well you totally know that WILL happen! If I feel I am pushing myself too hard, I slow down.
I take this conversation very seriously with my own clients as well. Listen to your bodies and know what you can and cannot do. It is not a problem to slow down for a class and take it at your own pace. Depending on your day and how you are feeling you may or may not be able to give 100% and its totally okay. Your health must come first!
The problem in life and as a human is we all think it “won’t happen to me” mentality to whatever it is and then BAM…you/I are dealing with it. If you really listen, sometimes the warning signs are there….or my visual is always a “check engine” light will begin to flash and that is when you need to….well….check your engine…and better yet, just like an oil change….get checked over every 5000 km to ensure you and I are running perfectly!
Writing this, I am realizing how much better we are to our cars at times than we are to our bodies…just an observation! 😉
The moral of this blog today is listen to what your body needs. Meditate. Spend some time with your self and discover what you see will support optimum health for your self and by all means, keep your check engine light working and your oil changed every 5000 km!
Take care of your selves out there!
